Sunny Side
Filipino Cafe brand identity
Sunny Side is a yet to open modern Philippine café located in Carlton, VIC. The café will enter the popular brunch café scene in Melbourne, offering an Asian cuisine that is not common in the greater culinary landscape in Australia, despite the significant population of Australians with Philippine heritage. Because of this Sunny Side wants their visual identity to represent Filipino values, culture, and visuals throughout its brand identity, with the intention that their visual identity will stand out amongst the crowd of modern cafes in Melbourne.
The key values that have been outlined correlate to the values of Philippine culture, as well as the values that Sunny Side café want to embody throughout their establishment. These key words include: community, vibrant, authentic, modern, and joyful.
The visuals throughout the brand identity are inspired by various Filipino visual elements, such as the colours and the sun shape of the Filipino flag. The colours used are vibrant and joyful, relating to the keywords set out for the project to follow.
The collateral designs include an A3 menu, loyalty cards, stamps and takeaway stickers. Some of the visuals have been carried over from the mural design, intended to be painted indoors, and shared online.
The mural design has been created as direct inspiration from Philippine culture. It is common to see painted murals in small and local establishments to create an inviting and personal space. Sunny Side wanted to bring in this value to their own café to further bring in the culture to their space. Sunny Side have also requested an animated version of the mural design, to promote on social media and their website and to create more life into the overall brand.
A side note
My close relative in the Philippines runs a resort with a lot of hand painted murals around the establishment. These are some images I have of them, and you can already see just how vibrant and expressive Filipino businesses are in local and public spaces
The importance of Sunny Side's request for a decorative mural extends from the charming characteristics of local Philippine spaces.
